On 25 July 2018, the Col du Portet became for the first time in the history of the Tour de France the arrival at the highest altitude of the Pyrenees.
A new giant
The road, formerly a single track, was finalized for this event and constitutes an impressive ascent: 16 km from the village of Saint-lary at 8.7% average slope with passages that can reach 11%.
This stage was a decisive step of the Tour de France 2018. At 17h39, Nairo Quintana won the stage queen of the Pyrenees. The latter, ranked 8th at the start of the stage, attacked at the foot of the Col du Portet and thus won his first stage of the 2018 Tour. The Colombian also made a nice operation also in the general classification by including Romain Bardet who cracked in the last climb. Behind him, Dan Martin finished 2nd while Geraint Thomas took 3rd place. The big losers of this stage did Romain Bardet but also Chris Froome.
